Bowman M175
Got this from ebay in 2007, advertised as a Bowman M180, and it was a bit of a wreck. There was no paint on the base and the chimney was attached to the base with a piece of wood. The firebox had little paint on either but it still cost me just under £30. The first thing I noticed was that the chimney is not original, now that wasn't declared in the listing; it looks like it was made from a piece of 22mm plumbing pipe. I found a fellow enthusiast's site on the net with a picture of an M180 and, although it was similar to this one there were some significant differences. First the cylinder and crankshaft mount was longer on mine than theirs. Next the base on mine has more holes than the M180 and by this time I'm thinking I have bought a collection of parts from lots of different engines. Until, that is, I found a photo of an M175. Now the M175 is similar to the M180 except that the former has a slightly larger base and an additional shaft with gears. Things then started to fall into place as I realised I have an incomplete M175. So this is an M175 minus the extra shaft and gears and without a burner. That apart I really love the engine, it has character and sooner or later I'm going to find out if it also runs. The burner is a late arrival, having bought an M135 it came with 2 burners and one of them fits this.... brilliant !
